CAUGHT LIVE: THE TREMBLING WILBURYS

Rockin' The RoadhouseThe Trembling Wilburys ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Despite the inclement weather and somewhat awful traffic, a trip to The Roadhouse, Birmingham on the night of Friday 24th July was not to be missed as ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] recommended septet The Trembling Wilburys made a welcome return visit to the hometown of ELO & Jeff Lynne.

This was my first opportunity to actually meet, see and hear a band often featured here at ELOBF and my expectations were more than fulfilled with an inspired, energetic and accurate performance not only of The Traveling Wilburys songbook but also a fair selection of the works of Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty.

The London based group - founded by drummer Dave Stark - not only managed to effortlessly squeeze on the Roadhouse stage with much ease, they thrilled a healthy audience with their musicianship and unerring vocal accuracy. For me, the mark of a great tribute band is primarily their ability to reproduce live the music of their intended subject[s] to the degree that those in attendance can start to experience what the real deal would sound like in that setting. And The Trembling Wilburys did that with ease!
In Dreams: Yours Truly KJS with Roy Orbison and George Harrison ...
Add to that the uncanny physical and vocal resemblance of Dave Collison to 'The Big O' from the first notes of "Only The Lonely" and Glen Knowler to 'The Quiet One' as "If I Needed Someone" began and it was easy to completely buy into the band and their amazing sound. Andy McNish also impressed with his fantastic renditions of Bob Dylan and Tom Petty classics not to mention his astounding treatment "Tweeter And The Monkey Man". Add to that the phenomenal guitar craft of Dzal Martin, particularly with "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", the suave bass work of Marko Laver, the intricate keys of Howard Robin and the seemingly effortless percussion of Dave Stark and you had an awesome musical spectacle to drink in and enjoy.

Of the twenty nine [29] songs on show, The Trembling Wilburys treated us their live interpretation of a dozen Traveling Wilburys classics drawn, of course from "Volume 1" and "Volume 3", with an extended encore performance of "Runaway" adding Del Shannon to the Wilburys equation. I loved the way that the night was split into distinct solo and Wilburys segments as it provided a wonderful momentum to the proceedings as many folks set about singing back and dancing to the seven on stage. Picking a fave is almost impossible from a night such as this but "Tweeter And The Monkey Man", "Wilbury Twist", "End Of The Line" and , of course, "Handle With Care" were bloody fantastic! Go see 'em folks!

The Trembling Wilburys are: Glen Knowler [as George Harrison]; Dave Collison [as Roy
Orbison]; Dzal Martin [Lead guitar]; Dave Stark [Founder/percussion]; Marko Laver [Bass]; Andy McNish [Rhythm guitar/harmonica] and Howard Robin [Keyboards]
Looking On: The Traveling Wool Dollies ...
The Trembling Wilburys set list [29 songs]: "Only The Lonely" ~ "Claudette" ~ "Crying" ~ "Working For The Man" ~ "Running Scared" ~ "In Dreams" ~ "Pretty Woman" ~ "If I Needed Someone" ~ "Here Comes The Sun" ~ "Something" ~ "If Not For You" ~ "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" ~ "Hold On Tight" ~ "I Won't Back Down" ~ "You Got It" ~ "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" ~ "She's My Baby" ~ "Dirty World" ~ "Heading For The Light" ~ "Inside Out" ~ "Rattled" ~ "Last Night" ~ "Not Alone Anymore" ~ "Wilbury Twist" ~ "Tweeter And The Monkey Man" ~ "[All I Can Do Is] Dream You" ~ "End Of The Line" ~ "Handle With Care" ~ "Runaway"

ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] recommends The Trembling Wilburys to those enlightened folks who enjoy the music of The Traveling Wilburys, ELO & Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, The Move, The Idle Race, 'Brum Beat', The Beatles and related artistes.

THE ORCHESTRA: TWO OUT OF THREE [WEB SITES] AIN'T BAD

Third time lucky: The Orchestra Former Members Electric Light Orchestra & ELO Part II ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Most established bands have an official web site but lately The Orchestra [former members of ELO & ELO Part II] - who feature, of course, former ELO stalwarts Mik Kaminski and Louis Clark in their ranks alongside fellow ELO Part II co-founder Eric Troyer plus Parthenon HuxleyGordon Townsend and Glen Burtnik - have had up to three [3] sites on the go thus:

theorchestra.net [Original]
theorchestraband.com [now disabled]
theorchestraonline.com [New]

You may recall that ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] reported recently that the band had a new web site up and running at www.theorchestraband.com but since then, it appears that a new web site has appeared at www.theorchestraonline.com with their former [second] web site now disabled and their original web site at www.theorchestra.net continuing seemingly unaffected!
Second site disabled: The Orchestra Starring ELO Former Members ...
Maybe The Orchestra are trying to set "A New World Record" for the most official web sites but hopefully the "Confusion" caused by this turn of events will be temporary!

CAUGHT LIVE: CHINA CRISIS @ FRODSHAM FESTIVAL

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! China Crisis are a band who have absolutely nothing to do with ELO but they do happen to be one of my other fave bands who orbit outside of the ELOBF universe. Their appearance at the Frodsham Festival in Cheshire last night [Friday 10th July] presented an opportunity for me to go see them perform live for the first time in just over twenty years. And the 140 mile round trip was well worth it as the Liverpool band, headed up by co-founders Gary Daly and Eddie Lundon, delivered an impressive set of seventeen songs that included a fair portion of tracks from their classic 1985 LP "Flaunt The Imperfection",  a trio of tracks from their superb new album "Autumn In The Neighbourhood", a selection of their hit singles and a wonderful cover of Carole King's "It's Too Late".
It really was great to see and hear classic album tracks such as "Wall Of God", "Strength Of Character" and "Gift Of Freedom" intermingled with the more recent new material such as "Down Here On Earth" and "Fool". This was a friendly and enjoyable evening. I loved their unique interpretation of "It's Too Late", the tasty encore aperitif of "Diary Of A Hollow Horse" and the live debut of those long awaited new cuts. A very nice gig indeed. I'm already looking forward to the China Crisis gig at The Robin 2 on Sunday 29th November ...

Set list: "African & White" ~ "Wall Of God" ~ "No More Blue Horizons" ~ "Autumn In The Neighbourhood" ~ "Down Here On Earth" ~ "Fool" ~ "You Did Cut Me" ~ "It's Too Late" ~ "Strength Of Character" ~ "Black Man Ray" ~ "Wishful Thinking" ~ "King In A Catholic Style" ~ "Working With Fire & Steel " ~ "Christian" ~ "Tragedy & Mystery" ~ "Gift Of Freedom" ~ "Diary Of A Hollow Horse"

TOUR LITTLE DIAMONDS

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! It's been a real blessing to go see, hear and experience the performances of three modern day music legends in the last couple of months with Paul McCartney, Elton John and Fleetwood Mac all performing at venues in the Midlands in recent weeks.

CAUGHT LIVE: PAUL McCARTNEY @ BIRMINGHAM 27/05/15
CAUGHT LIVE: ELTON JOHN @ WALSALL 13/06/15

Of course this makes Yours Truly KJS rue, all the more, the malady that meant that I was unable to go see Jeff Lynne's ELO last September at Hyde Park. Indeed, my triple gig tonic means that I can now look forward "At Last" to finally getting around to seeing Jeff Lynne's ELO in person. So, with a Jeff Lynne produced Bryan Adams single and album due for release this Summer and the current Take That "III" tour taking up most of 2015, Spring 2016 looks most likely to be the earliest opportunity to see a UK [if not limited world] tour by Jeff Lynne's ELO [including Richard Tandy] and preceded by the long awaited release of that oft hinted 'new' studio album by the ELO maestro.
Jeff Lynne's ELO: Anticipating 2016 tour dates ...
Hence, having just seen the best in the business produce three phenomenal live shows, ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] very much looks forward to the day of a certain announcement ...

RECOMMENDED: CLOSE TO THE MARK [Mark Stanway]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Most folks associate Mark Stanway with legendary Midlands rockers Magnum. But a cursory glance through his great new book reveals mentions of the likes of ELORoy Wood, Don Arden, Jet Records, Louis Clark, Phil Bates amongst not a few other well known bands and music icons. The book is packed with the memoirs and recollections of the acclaimed keyboardist of his time in the music business as well as over 170 unseen photographs and really looks like being a 'must buy' for fans in the ELOBF universe. "Close To The Mark" by Mark Stanway [Stanbo/134 pages] is attractively priced at just £13.99 each and can be purchased via this link thus:

DO YA: JEFF LYNNE PARTAKES IN NEW PUGWASH ALBUM

The new album sleeve for "Play This Intimately [As If Among Friends]" ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Followers of ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] recommended Irish power pop quartet Pugwash and fans of Jeff Lynne will be thrilled and pleased as punch to know that their new album "Play This Intimately [As If Among Friends]" features brief vocal input from the ELO maestro on its opening track "Kicking And Screaming" where Jeff shouts a certain modified line from The Move's original version of "Do Ya" at approximately 2:45 into the track. "Kicking And Screaming" can be accessed via SoundCloud within this excellent article thus:

Their successful Pugwash Pledge Music campaign significantly exceeded its funding goal to ensure that what looks to be one of the album highlights of 2015 was recorded, mixed and packaged ready for release, first to their fans and then "All Over The World". The much anticipated new Pugwash album also includes - rather amazingly - the contributions of Ray Davies [The Kinks], Andy Partridge [XTC] and Neil Hannon [The Divine Comedy, The Duckworth Lewis Method] and will be issued by the legendary Omnivore Recordings - the same label who brought you "A Rose In A Garden Of Weeds: A Preamble Through The History Of Pugwash" last year.
Pugwash [L-R] are: Joe Fitzgerald ~ Tosh Flood ~ Thomas Walsh ~ Shaun McGee
The band showcased four [4] new songs from the album to rave reviews during their recent UK tour back in May. Check out this ELOBF review of their amazing gig at Frome via this link thus:

"Play This Intimately [As If Among Friends]" by Pugwash will be released in CD, vinyl and download formats on Friday 4th September. ELOBF understands that a limited quantity of the LP edition will also be pressed in red vinyl too!
"Play This Intimately [As If Among Friends]" will be: [1] "Kicking And Screaming" [2] "Lucky In Every Way" [3] "Feed His Heart With Coal" [4] "Just So You Know" [5] "Clouds" [6] "The Fool I Had Become" [7] "You Could Always Cry" [8] "Hung Myself Out To Dry" [9] "Silly Love" [10] "Oh Happy Days" [11] "All The Way From Love" [12] "We Are Everywhere"
