JEFF LYNNE'S ELO: BBC RADIO THEATRE DATE CONFIRMED

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Fans of Jeff Lynne's ELO will get the opportunity to tune in and hear the old and the new during a one [1] hour BBC Radio 2 broadcast on Thursday 12th November 2015. BBC Radio Theatre will present the concert between 8:00PM and 9:00PM on the eve of what will be the worldwide album release of "Alone In The Universe" thus:

"The BBC's Radio Theatre opens its doors to an iconic band that have been making music history since the 1970s. ELO and their frontman Jeff Lynne have sold over 50 million albums worldwide and created a back catalogue of chart-topping hits that include Mr Blue Sky, Telephone Line, Livin' Thing and Strange Magic. Jeff Lynne's ELO play his classic tracks along with some new songs from their first album of new material in almost 15 years, Alone in the Universe, to an intimate crowd of fans. Known as one of the most iconic forces in music history, ELO delivers the new album, Jeff Lynne's ELO Alone in the Universe , which will be the first new ELO music in a decade. As with ELO's previous chart-topping albums, Jeff Lynne continues to serve as ELO's producer, songwriter, arranger, lead singer and guitarist. Jeff Lynne was the creative genius behind ELO which sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, had more than 20 Top 40 Hits across the US and the UK and received countless awards and accolades. At the time of ELO's formation, Lynne had said the goal was to create modern rock and pop songs - a goal that remains true some 30 years later with the creation of this new material."

ONE STEP AT A TIME: ANOTHER NEW ELO TRACK LANDS

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Yet another track from "Alone In The Universe", the highly anticipated new album from Jeff Lynne's ELO, was unveiled earlier today via Entertainment Weekly. "One Step At A Time " - a track that would fit nicely within "Discovery" - follows the release of "When I Was A Boy" and "When The Night Comes".

www.ew.com/article/2015/10/28/jeff-lynne-one-step-at-time-elo

This, in effect, means that we have now already heard half of the ten [10] tracks listed on the standard edition of the new album, remembering that the title track "Alone In The Universe" as well as "I'm Leaving You" were played by Billy Sloan on BBC Radio Scotland during his interview here with the ELO maestro in early October ... and there are still [2] weeks to go.

You might want to call me "Daft as a brush!"  but it amazes me, as I approach my 48th birthday, as to how different the music marketing methodology is now in Yours Truly 2015 when compared to the days when we were treated to a lead single a few weeks in advance of a new album. As previously noted, these days many so-called music fans will not pay for new material so making available such a large proportion of "Alone In The Universe" does not make sense to this writer even though I know that Yours Truly KJS will buy it many times over, as will very many ELO fans.

You can buy "One Step At A Time" from iTunes and amazon in the UK/US via these links thus:

Please no more AITU songs - until, of course, Friday 13th November 2015!

WHEN I WAS A BOY: NEW PROMO VIDEO GOES BACK TO THE STORY

The classy new promo video from Jeff Lynne's ELO also acknowledges the classic ELO line-up ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The emotive and poignant new music video for "When I Was A Boy" by Jeff Lynne's ELO is due to receive its American premiere tonight [Tuesday 27th October] on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon at 11:35PM [EST] on NBC. The video [the third released to date] is directed by Warren Fu and is a wonderful telling of the life story of Jeff from his early days in Birmingham through his time with ELO and The Traveling Wilburys right up to his present day return as Jeff Lynne's ELO. The film - replete with much Blue Sky - has a style and feel reminiscent of the award winning visual promo for "Free As A Bird" by The Beatles and can be viewed either via the Jimmy Fallon Tumblr page or via ELOVEVO @ YouTube below thus:

MR. RADIO: JEFF LYNNE MEDIA OVERVIEW

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Jeff Lynne's visit to the UK during the last days of September has been very fruitful for fans of the ELO maestro, yielding at least three [3] high profile radio interviews alongside an ever increasing number of magazine and newspaper interviews in advance of the new Jeff Lynne's ELO album "Alone In The Universe" [out on Friday 13th November 2015] and lead single "When I Was A Boy" [released Friday 25th September].

Jeff called in on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Friday 12th September and he participated in at least two [2] further radio interviews with Billy Sloan at BBC Radio Scotland [broadcast Saturday 3rd October] and Ian Danter at Planet Rock Radio [broadcast on Sunday 25th October] during his visit. Interviews with Jeff have also appeared in The Sunday Times supplement, Classic Rock and Rolling Stone magazines with more to be published soon in MOJO and Poland's Teraz Rock to name a few.

And we can look forward to a return visit from Jeff Lynne to UK shores in November [at the very least] in order to promote "Alone In The Universe", to appear on the bill at the Royal Variety Performance on Friday 13th November [the album release date] and also on one of Chris Evans' resurrected TFI Friday shows [ten episodes are scheduled between 16th October and 18th December so Jeff could make an appearance on either the 6th or 20th November editions].

These are great days indeed for fans of ELO & Jeff Lynne as we await confirmation of those highly anticipated live UK/Ireland dates featuring Richard Tandy and the Take That touring band in Spring 2016 [and hopefully some in the US thereafter too].

CAUGHT LIVE: ANDY FAIRWEATHER LOW & THE LOW RIDERS

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Andy Fairweather-Low will tell you that he has been in the business for nearly fifty years. And he has since 1966 when Amen Corner were founded in South Wales and went onto conquer the UK singles charts with their classic #1 "If Paradise [Is Half As Nice]" and their #4 hit cover of Roy Wood's Move rocker "Hello Susie", amongst not a few others including "Bend Me Shape Me" and "High In The Sky". Following on from that, the affable Welshman has enjoyed a successful solo career and been on the road with the likes of George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Bill Wyman and Roger Waters as well as sharing the stage with Jeff Lynne at The Concert For George in 2002 before forming his Low Riders in 2006.

Having first bumped into Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders last December supporting Roy Wood's Christmas extravaganza at Birmingham Symphony Hall, their gig at The Robin 2 on Sunday 18th October was simply too attractive to resist. Sporting former Wizzard man Nick Pentelow in their ranks, the sizeable Sunday crowd were witness to a superb set of songs which included some sublime Southern Blues, gospel, jazz, a taste of reggae as well as material from Andy's time with Amen Corner, Fair Weather, his solo career and the Low Riders impressive song roster.
Andy Bennett + KJS enjoying a pint with Nick Pentelow ...
Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders are a tight band. Be it their enigmatic front man, their classy drummer Paul Beavis, superlative bassist Dave Bronze or the somewhat amazing saxophonist Nick Pentelow, the quartet enthralled and entertained an appreciative audience from the first note to the last chord with the more than able support of Andy Bennett [Ocean Colour Scene] - particularly with his marvellous acoustic renditions of The Beatles"Here There And Everywhere" and "Come Together" as well as his very own "Hole In The Road". This was a thoroughly enjoyable evening with two exceptionally talented artistes. Roll on Roy Wood's Rockmas when we shall see AFL again!

Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders performed: "Something Else"; "Hard Hat Beauty"; "Lightning Boogie"; "Life Ain't No Competition"; "Baby What Do You Want Me To Do?"; "Hymn 4 For My Soul"; "I'll Get You"; "High In The Sky"; "Let Me Be Your Angel"; "Travellin' Light"; "Natural Sinner"; "Dance On"; "Billy's Back"; "Rocky Raccoon"; "Reggae Tune"; "La Booga Rooga"; "Gin House Blues"; "Lay My Burden Down"; "When Things Go Wrong"; "It Was Sad When That Great Ship Went Down"; "So Glad You're Mine"; "Bend Me Shape Me"; "Wide Eyed And Legless"; "Tequila"; "Peter Gunn"; "Apache"; "Route 66"; "Puttin' On The Style"; "If Paradise [Is Half As Nice]"
Andy Fairweather Low [Lead vocals/guitars]; Dave Bronze [Bass/backing vocals];
Nick Pentelow [Saxophone/clarinet/percussion]; Paul Beavis [Drums]

Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders are next at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre on Saturday 24th October with tickets priced at £20.00 each [*plus booking fee]. REVIEW: GET UP [Bryan Adams]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! When Jeff Lynne said that he was working with Bryan Adams during his visit to Birmingham back in March 2014 - confirming a major announcement suggested here at the time - many eyebrows were raised not only in the ELO fraternity but also that of the music media in general. Since then there has been undoubtedly a kind of critical snobbery developing regarding the ensuing album "Get Up", released worldwide during October 2015.

There is much more to this record than the first three songs made available in advance: opener "You Belong To Me" [a rockabilly tune that oozes Dave Edmunds]; "Brand New Day" [another Adams anthem that sounded great live at Hyde Park last month] and the Beatleseque "Don't Even Try". Fans of Bryan Adams, ELO and Jeff Lynne should love "Get Up". It's a new sound and a departure for the Canadian rocker - something. It's full of the production touches and licks that Jeff is renowned for. It has a sound that constantly reminds the listener of Tom Petty's much loved "In The Great Wide Open" sessions with the added husky vocals of the man who brought us "Reckless" all those years ago.
We look forward to those "Get Up" UK and Ireland tour dates in 2016 ...
Granted, the track lengths are relatively short - as it was with "Long Wave" - the previous solo outing from the ELO maestro in 2012 - but somehow everything hangs well together here for me, particularly when you factor in those four bonus acoustic versions and the interview [on deluxe/download editions only]. If you want to rock, have a listen to "Go Down Rockin'" and "Thunderbolt". If you want a ballad, try "We Did It All" and "Yesterday Was Just A Dream". If you want that familiar Lynnesque sound, then select "That's Rock And Roll" and "Do What You Gotta Do" [a song originally destined for the "American Hustle" soundtrack, my personal fave and so very Tom Petty!] on repeat.

Whereas certain music publications have criticized "Get Up" as a couple of EP's thrown together and somewhat lightweight, I beg to differ. Yes, it is a short album as albums go, but often great things come in small packages. And I've no doubt that these songs will sound fantastic live in 2016 too. That's my opinion of Bryan Adams' latest offering. Concise and classy. "Get Up" and buy it folks! [9/10]

CHART TRIUMPH CONTINUES FOR HYDE PARK DISC

Four (4) weeks in total at #1 for "Live At Hyde Park" by Jeff Lynne's ELO ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Isn't it great to be a fan of ELO and Jeff Lynne at the moment? Not only do we have the Jeff Lynne produced Bryan Adams LP "Get Up" in the process of being released worldwide in October and the brand new Jeff Lynne's ELO album "Alone In The Universe" due out on Friday 13th November, we can also now toast the fact that the DVD/Blu-Ray release of "Live At Hyde Park" by Jeff Lynne's ELO is now nicely settled in the Official UK Music Video Chart Top 3 some five weeks or one month after its release in early September after attaining impressive chart positions of #1, #1, #3, #2 and #2 respectively.

Remembering that the "ELO Live At Wembley" Blu-Ray edition also made #1 back in March, wouldn't it be great if "Alone In The Universe" also hits the top spot next month in the Official UK Album Chart to make it a hat trick of Number Ones for ELO and Jeff Lynne in 2015?

CAUGHT LIVE [10]: QUILL @ CANNOCK 09/10/15

Atmospheric Quill were again in their element last night ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Yours Truly KJS travelled just a few miles last night [Friday 9th October] to attend my tenth Quill gig at the accommodating and friendly Prince of Wales Theatre in Cannock. And it was again a rewarding experience. The legendary Midlands based Celtic rock septet have been around for many years in various guises yet every performance from Joy Strachan-Brain's present day incarnation - including an energized Bev Bevan - seems to unveil another facet to their character. And last night the band again demonstrated that with a polished, innovative and highly entertaining show ably supported by the impressive guitarist and vocalist Dave Brown - particularly with his stunning cover of "That's Entertainment". What a voice!
Solo spotlight: Support Dave Brown [L] and Bev 'Bongo' Bevan [R] ...
So what was different about this Quill show? The answer is that the band were tighter than ever, completely in sync with each other on stage and, most importantly, they clearly enjoyed what they were doing - much like a working family unit, all equal and all equally talented. But what caught my eye last night was the enhanced contribution of Tony Kelsey with his wonderful guitar licks and some fantastic interplay with violinist Kate. I also loved the sultry new introduction that has been created for Dave Bailey's popular rendition of "Galway Girl". Every show is different with Quill but one mainstay for me is always the emotion with which Joy delivers "Life Is Life" - a real taster for their next album, which is already promising to be a real treasure, according to several sources.

Matt Davies is quite the consummate bassist [and a fantastic vocalist too] and his delivery of "Falling Slowly" was again of the highest order to prove it. Percussion is the pulse of any band so the seamless drumwork of Tim Tandler and Bev Bevan - working in timely tandem - was again on show, a vital cog in the machinery of Quill. Watching The Move and ELO co-founder playing percussion at such close quarters, you begin to realise that there is much more to his game than the name Bev 'Basher' Bevan ever alluded to! Mention must also be made sound man Alan Caves and company, thanks to their top quality PA set-up on the night! All in all, this was a concert that was a pleasure to attend and another testament to the growing presence of the mighty Quill.
Set list [15 songs]: "The Chain" : "Harvest" : "Duelling Banjos" : "Matador" : "A Showman's Life" : "Say It Ain't So" : "Life Is Life" : "Nine Mile Camp" : "Falling Slowly" : "Jig-A-Jig" : "Galway Girl" : "Whiskey Girls" : "The Celtic Experience" : "England" : "Whiskey In The Jar"

Quill are: Joy Strachan-Brain [Vocals/percussion] ~ Bev Bevan [Drums/Percussion] ~ Kate McWilliam [Violin/keyboards/recorder/vocals] ~ Tony Kelsey [Guitars/vocals] ~ Tim Tandler [Drums/Percussion] ~ Dave Bailey [Keyboards/guitar/vocals] ~ Matt Davies [Bass/vocals]

The next Quill gig will be at Ludlow Assembly Rooms in Shropshire on Saturday 7th November with tickets priced at just £20 each. Find out what Quill are up to by visiting their official web site via this link thus:

NEW ELO SINGLE EDGES INTO DOWNLOAD CHART

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The new Jeff Lynne's ELO single "When I Was A Boy" was a new entry in this weeks Official UK Singles Downloads Chart entering at a modest #94. This was a somewhat lowly position given the fact that both YouTube videos [Lyric and Audio] over at ELOVEVO have amassed well over 420,000 views in just over a week and the song was listed much higher in the iTunes and amazon sales rankings.

This is perhaps a symptom of the modern music industry where many folks simply will not pay for [new] music if they can view or obtain it for free. On the other hand, it may well be that ELO fans have opted instead to pre-order and wait for the new album "Alone In The Universe" to arrive next month. Another factor could be that iTunes and amazon downloads are not as significant a contribution to overall sales figures as one might think.

It will be interesting to see where "When I Was A Boy" lies in the chart next week after [hopefully] another week of increasing nationwide airplay ...

JEFF LYNNE: ELO IN THE 21st CENTURY

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! From "Time" to "Time", folks ask me about ELO, both the current and the classic line-ups. Recently that interest has increased with news that we can look forward to a new ELO album "Alone In the Universe" next month. The most common question that I've been asked recently is: Why the name Jeff Lynne's ELO? The way that Yours Truly KJS explains it to those who ask is more or less like this:

Back in 1999, Bev Bevan sold his share of the name/domain Electric Light Orchestra [ELO] to Jeff Lynne for an undisclosed sum. At that time, ELO Part II effectively ceased to be with the remaining members continuing as The Orchestra [former members of ELO & ELO Part II] to this day.

With Jeff back at the helm now and with full legal rights to the ELO name, "Zoom" - the first new Electric Light Orchestra studio album since "Balance Of Power" [1986] - was released in 2001. Some fans saw "Zoom" as essentially a Jeff Lynne solo album - with a little help from his friends including Richard Tandy, George Harrison and Ringo Starr - even terming it as "Armchair Theatre Part II". Sadly, "Zoom" struggled to dent the UK Album Chart, attaining a modest #34 in a three [3] week chart run.

Another eleven [11] years elapsed before Jeff released his first solo material since "Armchair Theatre" [1990] when "Long Wave" - an album reinterpreting the songs that influenced a young Jeff Lynne - was issued in tandem with "Mr. Blue Sky: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra" - a re-imagining of his classic ELO songs. October 2012 saw both "Long Wave" and "Mr. Blue Sky" enter the UK Album Chart at #7 and #8 respectively. It was indeed a stunning comeback that made the names Jeff Lynne and ELO somewhat interchangeable to the general public and fans alike.

November 2015 will see "Alone In The Universe" by Jeff Lynne's ELO hit the shelves and, with a healthy pre-order quota, it could well see the ELO maestro head up to the upper reaches of the UK Album Chart for the first time since 1983's "Secret Messages". The album will again see Jeff carrying out most if not all musical duties under the ELO moniker. Hence the name Jeff Lynne's ELO - registered as a domain since July 2015. A name that fully associates the owner with his vehicle - or should I say spaceship?

"Zoom", "Long Wave", "Mr. Blue Sky" and "Alone In The Universe". All Jeff Lynne yet three quarters ELO. All the products of a musical genius and a personal hero. Find out more at:
